Treating Dry Socket At Home

Posted on 3/2/2019 by Dr. Jon Packman
If you have an adult tooth removed, you need to be concerned with preventing dry socket. Dry socket is a painful condition that occurs when the blood clot fails to develop at the extraction site. The clot may also dissolve or dislodge before the wound has fully healed, and the underlying nerves and bone may be exposed. If you experience severe pain after a tooth extraction, dry socket is likely to blame, and there are things you can do at home to reduce your symptoms.

Take Pain Medication as Prescribed

When it comes to staying comfortable with dry socket, taking your pain medication as prescribed is an important step. Try to stay ahead of the pain by taking your dosage before your tooth starts to hurt again. If you don’t have a prescription painkiller, over-the-counter medications may be able to help ease your discomfort.

Flush Out the Socket

Another helpful tip is to flush out the socket regularly. By rinsing with saltwater, you can flush any food particles or debris that may be stuck inside. This debris could lead to an infection and may contribute to your discomfort, so it is important to remove it.

Use a Medicated Dressing

We will pack your socket with a medicated dressing in order to promote healing, so it is important that you keep this in place. It promotes fast pain relief and healing. The severity of your symptoms may determine whether your dressing needs to be changed and if you need other pain relief.
The good news is that once your treatment is started, you should start to feel some immediate pain relief. Pain and discomfort levels should improve and will be gone within a couple of days. However, it is important that you come into our office for any follow-up appointments or other concerns. Call us today to learn more.
